Bali Love
The first time I visited the Indonesian island Bali was around 25 years ago. It was love at first sight!
I remember our small hut in Candidasa, overlooking the sea. Only bars for some openings as windows, so free entry for dozens of cockroaches, the size of a baby’s hand. No running water and of course no hot water, just a ‘bak mandi’. Similar to this one, but ours was even less ‘fancy’;-).

Scoop up some water to wash your face and body, or to flush the toilet, and watch out not to accidentally scoop up any cockroaches while you’re at it;-).
But also: breakfast with toasted banana sandwiches and tea every day and beautiful views. For USD 5 per night.
I remember the amazing, intense green colors of the rice paddies. The incredible kindness of the people. The fascinating and beautiful local dances, like the trance-like Kecak Fire Dance.

I remember the gorgeous sunsets. The colorful daily offerings everywhere. Magical Ubud and it’s Monkey Forest.

I felt that Bali was paradise and I wanted to stay there forever. Sigh….
My second visit was 15 years later, so 10 years ago. And the third visit dates back 2 years now.
Time to revisit!!!
Yes, we like Bali THAT much, even though a lot has changed - most of it not for the better- in those 25 years since my first stay on Bali. Fortunately there’s still a lot to love and enjoy on this island.
In less then a week we will be admiring Bali’s sensational sunsets over sea again. Yay!

I wrote about Bali before:
- about Bali’s Beaches and sunsets
- Traditional Bali: about the culture and traditions

These daily offerings are on almost every meter of Bali. Either on the pavement or in tiny house- or street-altars.
- About the W Hotel and about our fab room there

One of many super comfy and relaxing spots along the beach. This one belongs to the W hotel in Seminyak, Bali.
- About two deliciously kitsch restaurants: Salty Seagull and Motel Mexicola
Have you been to Bali? What were your favourite places and your fondest memories? Anything to add to my map?
