Motel Mexicola. Bali. Mexican kitsch galore.

August 19, 2014

Remember how I told you about Salty Seagull, a wonderfully kitschy restaurant in Seminyak, Bali? And how I immediately fell in love with that place?

Well, the people behind Salty Seagull have another restaurant in the same neighborhood, named Motel Mexicola, which I fell for equally hard and fast.

I am not going to repeat what it is that attracts me so much in places like these two; I explained that extensively in my post about Salty Seagull.

So this time, let me just walk you through restaurant Motel Mexicola. Hope you like it as much as I do.

As seen from the street.
Already the reservation desk is looking cool.
Stepping into the front patio. Loving the yellow cast-iron twirling stairs.
Murals in the patio.

When you step in the front patio, you stumble upon this altar. I think it is super-cool!

Motel Mexicola Bali

The pastel-colored sculpture is formed by the melted wax of about 15 bottle-candles; beautiful!
And then that picture of some black afro guy, surrounded by orange flowers, crowned by a neon-light.
The intense blue wall, the flowers, what a great wall!!!
Continue your tour and step into the large courtyard. What a cool ambiance! I have these mexican plastic tablecloths at home too. And crucifixes, rosaries and Maria de Guadeloupes. So I felt right at home;-). Only here in Motel Mexicola it is done better and they have better weather…hahaha.
On your left is a space with a colorful bar, wrought-iron furniture and heavily adorned nooks and niches.
The niches are all differently decorated.
So funky and creative. This wall has shoes painted on it!

A pot falls from a window and a child falls on the head of a man…???
On the right side of the courtyard we find another bar and seating area.
In awe!
In the middle is a huge double-sided stairway leading to the second floor.
I would move right in, really!
Wow!!! And can I say wow once more?

I have hundreds of Maria’s, saints and deities in my house as well.
I also have mexican stuff at home, like retablos and day of the dead items.
I used puppets and puppet heads to decorate my garden, but removed it, after renters said they found it scary and gloomy. No renters anymore, so am surely gonna put them back this summer!
In Haarlem I have dozens of deer in my house in all formats and from all sorts of materials.
In Motel Mexicola I admired these two wooden deer heads.
How crazy gorgeous are they?
My deer are adorned too, with xmas lights and all, but I feel now that they are quite modest compared to these two. Made me wonder why mine don’t wear headgear or earrings. Gonna do something about that when I am back home!;-)
Hahaha…fun and weirdly cool.
I have bottle cap art too at home; even made some myself.

So what do you think? Like this place? Or is it a little too much for you? The ambiance of which restaurant do you prefer: Salty Seagull’s or Motel Mexicola’s?

For more information check out Motel Mexicola’s website. We did not eat there, but they serve mexican food, as you may have guessed;-).

You must have been so happy when you found this place. Sooooo you.
And as I understand gives you great inspiration. Remember that American woman in the video on Sylvia’s site, one of the Fashionistas? Her art was totally you too. If you haven’t seen it.. I have the video at home.
