Salty Seagull. Bali. Crabs and ribs, quirk and kitsch.

July 15, 2014

When we stumbled upon restaurant Salty Seagull in Seminyak, I thought I’d died and gone to heaven.

This colorful and playful street side front drew me right in.

It is a big place, indoor and outdoors.

It happens to me from time to time, that I come across a house, a restaurant, a hotel, a place, or art that feels like it was made by me and/or for me. A place that is totally me, completely my taste, very “can I move in right away please?”…
THAT kinda place and feeling. Do you ever have that or is it just me?

Posing in front of the mural wall in the driveway of the restaurant.
Love this wall.

Well, Salty Seagull is one of these places. Totally!!!

It is arty, quirky, colorful, unusual and original. The decoration is full of kitsch elements, fun and humor.

The outdoor seating area. Look at all the quirky paintings on the fence; I am a big fan of asymmetry, of a disorderly decor. Of paintings hanging crooked and having no relation to one another.
Many of my favorite elements are present in the decor of Salty Seagull. E.g. mermaids, like the one on this wall.
The reception area where you enter the restaurant. Look at the painting of a weird, smoking cowboy with bow tie.

You first enter this spacious room. It looks like a mix of an american diner and a mexican shack.
Pool tables and a TV.
Xmas lights on the ceiling, like in my own house in Haarlem. I’m a huge fan of xmas lights all year around.

Hawaian hula girls, cowboys, shells and vintage portraits live together in perfect harmony under one roof.

Via the first room, you enter the second, main room. The one with a fabulous bar and decor.
There are paintings all around the bar. Unfortunately the bar stools prevent us from seeing them very well.
Isn’t it the coolest and quirkiest bar you ever saw?!
Every pillar is decorated meticulously with small paintings and portraits, lined by sea shells.

It is Mexico, America and Hawai united and integrated in a Balinese style wooden shack.

I love the neatly lined up vintage soda bottles.

Cowboys are another of my fav elements. This one reminds me of the work of Glen Baxter, a cool, funny british cartoonist. If you don’t know him, do check out his work. It is the combination of his sketches and his captions that is so surreal and funny.
Hula girls are another element of kitsch that I love.

Places like Salty Seagull leave me speechless and gasping for air. Walking around, in total awe, I can only utter one-syllabil words like “Oh”, “Ah” and “Wow”!

A place like Salty Seagull moves me, makes me happy on the spot and inspires me.

My house and garden in Haarlem are considered by many to be pretty ‘out there’, very kitsch and a tad eccentric. But seeing the interior of this restaurant makes me aware of how much I am holding back. Who knows what seeing this interior decor may lead to…. I might decide to do some more (and more over the top) ‘pimping’ in my house and garden in the Netherlands! Fun!

We only had drinks, but here is (a part of) the menu, in case you are interested:

What do you think of this place? Does it appeal to you? Do you find yourself being deeply moved by certain art, creativity, decoration and/or music? Or do you find that a bit silly?

For more info, visit Salty Seagull on FaceBook. They are located on Jln Petitenget, Seminyak, Bali, Indonesia. Open for lunch, dinner and drinks.

By the way: this restaurant-bar is the younger ‘sister’ of the longer existing restaurant by the same owners: Motel Mexicola, located not far from Salty Seagull. I will feature that place in a separate post soon.

I think that Salty Seagull no longer exists, Brett. But I’m not 100% sure.
