How to wear a hat

September 26, 2015

Hey, didn’t I see this post about a week ago?!

Yes, you are right.

But….that was just a draft. Only half finished. I accidentally pressed ‘publish’. Found out after a couple of hours and quickly withdrew it. But of course not before quite some people saw it and even left a comment. Oops!

So here it is again. This time it’s complete, as it was supposed to be;-).

Oversized newsboy hat. I added the flower. This is more of an autumn hat, due to the material. I like it!

Queen of Accessories

As I told you, recently, during a difficult period, I cleaned, decluttered and reorganized my house.

Everything went through my hands and ‘everything’ is in my case (being a ‘more is more’ person) A LOT!

As the self-crowned Queen of Accessories, obviously I have a respectable number of hats. (Like I have numerous scarfs, jewelry, hair-accessories, shoes, etc.)

woman wearing a white hat with green flower |curlytraveller.com

A cloche model. I like this hat with its big green flower and it’s colorful lining.
Not 100 % sure about how it looks on me.
Maybe it’s a bit too tight? What do you think?

My hats are not Real Designer Fancy Beautiful hats like Judith from the Style Crone. Hers are spectacular, wow wow, and works of art.

No, mine are just hats. Summer hats, winter hats, sun hats.

Woman in floppy hat |curlytraveller.com

Simple, yet huge and glamorous sun hat. I like it. Yes to this hat, as far as I’m concerned.

Why I only occasionally wear a hat

I adore hats, but have to admit that I don’t wear them often, due to various reasons.

  1. it’s always so windy in Holland
  2. it’s too hot and humid in Singapore
  3. either I have one or more big clips in my hair or I have it in an up-do, in both of which cases hats don’t sit well on my head
Woman wearing a classic straw hat |curlytraveller.com

A classic straw hat. A bit damaged. Will see if I can repair it. I’m not sure yet wether I will spice it up as well…

About hat heads and hat hair

Too bad that I don’t wear them more often, since I love hats AND I have a hat head.

Say what? Let me explain:

  • hat head: one has a head (shape) and face that for some reason works very well with hats
  • not to be confused with hat hair: hair that is ruined (flattened) from wearing a hat

This fedora hat has unusual colors. I say yes to this hat.

How to wear a hat

  1. hats come in sizes. Buy your hats in the right size. I, e.g., have a small head. Find out your size.

Woman with pink raffia hat |curlytraveller.com

I like the color of this raffia cloche hat with it’s embroidered flowers.
But it’s not gonna work as it is now. Help, I’ve gone blind! Oh no, it’s my hat covering half of my face.
Either it’s simply too big for me. In that case it’s on it’s way out. Or it’s something I can fix by lifting up and fixating the flap on the side or in the middle.
    What do you think?

  2. pull the hat over your head. As opposed to letting it sit on top of your head. That looks silly.

Woman wearing a white summer hat |curlytraveller.com

A simple hat. Cloche style. Maybe I will ‘pimp’ it. Add some flowers, beads or pompoms. What do you think?

  3. many hats are best worn in an asymmetrical way. Depending on (the shape of) your head and face and the shape and design of the hat. Hats look nicest tilted to the front and/or tilted to one side

Woman with moss green velvet hat | curlytraveller.com

I love this cloche hat. It’s made out of green velvet, with beaded decorations. Cute. Definitely a keeper!

  4. hats and sunglasses work well together. Look at celebrities and models, sporting this look all the time. Hats and regular glasses are not always a good match. So if you wear glasses every day, be sure to wear them when trying on a hat to see if they work well together

Feel free to comment on my hats

Woman with red hat newsboy hat |curlytraveller.com

A simple, red newsboy hat. Also known as Gatsby hat. A keeper, but another one that I may spice up a bit with some additions. Any suggestions?

During my big cleaning and decluttering sessions I tried all my hats on, to see how they looked. Were they still in one piece or were they broken or damaged here and there? Did they sit and fit well? Did I actually like them enough to keep?

woman wearing a white newsboy hat |curlytraveller.com

My white newsboy hat. It came with the flowers. And yes, it’s a keeper. But I cannot promise you that it will be safe from my ‘pimping’ hands!;-)

What do you think of the ones you see in this post?

woman wearing a brown hat |curlytraveller.com

I have strong doubts about this hat. I like the quasi unfinished threaded seams, but the model is a bit weird. Keep or throw out?

Are you a hat person? Do you wear them often? How many hats do you own and what is your favorite model?

Oh, so many beautiful hats! You look fantastic in hats. In the end, I guess it’s our attitude and styling that make them come alive. I love the pink raffia cloche - maybe flip up the brim at the front and pin it. The colour is gorgeous and really suits you.

I like my hair styled up these days and a hat squishes the hair. I haven’t found many hats I like on me, except for berets and a fedora. Haha, your white newsboy and cloche hats are begging for your pimping hands!

Thanks for your input, Mel. I’m gonna try out flipping up the brim of the pink hat. Will let you know the result. Also of any pimping attacks that might happen (to some of the hats);-).

I knoooow; hair styled up and hats don’t match too well. Maybe you could still wear an eccentric fascinator every now and then?

I like you in hats, especially the first one, the straw hat, the green velvet one, the multicoloured one, the red one and the last white one. And the glamourous sunhat. But I think you would even look better in real proper hats like the ones Judith, the Style Crone is wearing. Higher on top of your head.

      Thanks, dear.

I’m sure I will try ‘proper’ hats one day (when I grow up…hahaha). I’m especially draw to fascinators.

The problem with proper hats though, can be my hair. That is already quite overwhelming and dominating. But I will surely try it out. Who knows!

I love and adore hats! Wear them constantly. And I just found out (thanks to you) that I have a hat head. Actually, I look better in hats than without.
I really like both of your newsboy hats.
    Enjoyed the post.
