Why I love Newtown - Sydney’s hippest neighbourhood

Why I love Newtown

When I visited Newtown, Sydney, a couple of years ago, it was love at first sight. I only spent a day there back then. This time I went back at least three times and I now love this suburb even more.

You probably wonder why I love Newtown so much.

Wow, where to start?

Now I think of it, I know exactly were to start: with it’s fabulous street art galore! The whole area is like a treasure trove for street art in all styles and sizes.
(I will show my favourite street art finds of Newtown in a separate post soon.)

But that’s not the only reason.

Newtown’s streets are filled with barista coffee places, hipster cafes, vintage shops, antiques and bric-a-brac stores, cool boutiques and funky, yummie restaurants.

There are several shops with retro fashion in Newtown.

It was not only retro and vintage. There were lots of cute and contemporary shops.

The clientele is young, hip and artistic.

Also, Newtown supposedly is the epicenter for lesbians in Sydney.

The architecture is a mix of art deco, filigree style houses and English type houses, painted in pastel colors.

All together Newtown has a creative, alternative and hip vibe. And THAT’s why I love Newtown so much!

Exploring Newtown

Exploring Newtown is quite simple, since you just follow King Street and Enmore Road, the two main, most interesting streets.

King Street

Key is to wander of constantly in side streets, back lanes and alleyways, because that’s where you will find a lot of street art.

Can you spot the street art on the wall of the alley just behind the row of houses?

Also make sure to walk around at Camperdown Park and in the streets directly around the park, because there, you will see really, really a lot of street art.

As I already told you, I love the walks/guides from Urban Walkabout Sydney. I wrote about them here.

This is their map of Newtown.

Try to get your hands on their free guide for Newtown that includes this map. You’ll find it handy.

Newtown’s street art

I’m preparing an article on ‘where to find street art in Sydney’. This will indicate all the areas in Sydney where you have a high change of spotting cool murals, graffity and other street art.

In the meantime I can’t wait to share my fabulous street art finds from Newtown with you! I’ll show them to you in my next post.

P.s.: I keep forgetting to take selfies, although I realize that it heightens the appeal of my articles if I show more pictures with myself in them. Be patient, okay, I’m trying to get it into my system. I DO have a selfie-stick since a while, so there’s nothing to stop me really;-). I just have to think about it.

THIS is definitely my kind of neighbourhood! Yes, I could get lost in there and would need to stop at one or two or three cafes for fortification. I love your manicure!
