Where to find street art in Newtown

July 30, 2015

Like Melbourne is the epicentre of street art in Australia (sorry, Sydney, but … you’re on a well-deserved second place! Not bad either, is it?), Newtown is the epicentre for street art in Sydney.

Beautiful street art on this wall.

In this hip, bohemian suburb, (together with neighboring hoods St Peters, Erskineville, Enmore and Camperdown) you stumble upon the coolest pieces everywhere.

(I wrote about street art in St Peters here.)

Such a variety in styles and topics!

To maximize your stumbling chances, you need to get off the main roads though. Most street art treasures are found in smaller side streets, back alleys and lane ways.

From sailors to foxes.

Needless to say, that where you spotted a mural yesterday, it may have disappeared tomorrow. That’s street art.

Despite that characteristic of street art, there are a few ‘classics’ to be found in Newtown, like “I have a dream’ and ‘Map of Africa’.

For the rest, it is a matter of walking around and returning from time to time to streets and alleys that are known to have street art. This way you will keep stumbling on new pieces.

Don’t forget to take pictures; the art work you enjoy so much today may be gone next time you pass by.

Unusual, to see a mural in only a few colors, like this one. Loving it!

Pretty!

This wikipedia article is pretty complete in its information about street art in Newtown. It provides info on the history, artists, murals and locations. A very useful resource for street art hunters like myself.

I love this street art. What a place! Inspiration on every surface. You are so right about taking pictures of it, of course. There was an incredible wall of art not far from me and it’s gone now. I’m glad I went through the fence and got some shots before it disappeared. I’ve always liked it as a backdrop for OOTD photos but the problem is the artwork hogs the whole spotlight! Heh. Great photos.

Street art disappears quickly sometimes, so it’s key to catch it in a picture while you can. And yes, it makes for show stealing backdrops. Someone as artistic and colorful as yourself can often do better with less attention-drawing backdrops, right?

I am terrible at this, I can just walk passed it and not notice. So thank you for documenting it for me. Ron is the same, he sees this. Which is why I have had street art as my background for an OOTD twice. With an outfit less colourful it is indeed a perfect backdrop.

Ron is creative and artistic, like me. That’s why we see these things.
