It’s no secret that I’m a huge fan of street art and a kind of a street art hunter where ever I am.
Street art hunting in St Peters, Sydney
I did some serious hunting during my three weeks in Sydney, recently, and St Peters neighborhood turned out to be a treasure trove.
It is a suburb, 7 km south of Sydney’s CBD, just a short train ride away. Its neighboring suburb happens to be Newtown, my favourite hood in Sydney. (More about Newtown in a separate blogpost.)
So one day, I took the train to St Peters. After I got off the train, I walked out of St Peters cute, little train station in the direction of Princes Highway and Sydney Park.
May Lane is fantastic!
Going in that direction, I stumbled right away upon May Lane, the epicenter of St Peters street art.
Vibrant graffiti murals cover the walls running along the walkways on both sides of the street.
Oh my, my heart jumped! I thought it would jump out of my chest from sheer excitement and enthusiasm.
I kept walking around, since many laneways there are filled with street art.

This mural covers the whole building. And it tells a story. The orange color is very vibrant and the chimpansee with baby are intense!
Industrial buildings and workspaces, surrounded by street art
In some streets the buildings house businesses, workspaces and offices for small companies.

The door of this tiny workspace was open, allowing me a quick peek inside. How fun that they hung an old garage door with mural as an artwork on their wall!
Garage doors as a canvas for street art
Other laneways have garages on both sides, that have their doors spray painted with murals, graffiti or colors.
St Peters street art - legal and supported
Street art in St Peters is legal and supported by local residents and businesses. How cool is that?!
Laid-back suburb with charming houses and lots of trees
Besides the alleys and lanes with street art, there are lovely streets in St Peters with charming houses and huge trees.
It felt peaceful and I was so charmed by this neighbourhood, that I instantly dreamt of living there.

Yes, I can see myself sitting here, in good company, reading a book, having a latte or just chatting.
The only disturbance was the noise of a constant stream of planes flying over the area, due to it’s position towards the airport. I spoke to a resident though, who said that that noise was no problem at all.
Hm, IF we would ever move to Sydney, I would seriously consider St Peters for renting a place.
The train would bring me to town in a jiffy, I can walk to my beloved Newtown and it’s a street art Walhalla. What’s not to like?!

This is not all. Just type ‘street art’ in the search bar and all the relevant blogposts will pop up. Easy peasy!
The street art pieces are gorgeous, especially the one of the father and children! Sidney looks a very interesting place and the neighbourhood is really lovable!! Not only I can see you sitting there but also myself on that delightful sofa!
You would be most welcome, dear Dan. We would each drink a nice cappuccino, while you would smoke a cigarette;-).
What a fab interesting spot! I can see why you’d like to live there.
bisous

When Sylvia lived near there, about 10 years ago, apparently this hood had a bad reputation. Curious to find out if that is still the case.
