Burgers and Beef. &MADE versus Lawry’s.

July 13, 2014

Since we moved to the Beaumont, we do more cooking then we did at the Sail. That’s easy, since at the Sail we did no cooking at all;-).

Strangely enough, going to a food court (aka very basic, local food, simple tables and stools, no glitz or glam, but fine food) is way cheaper then home-cooking.

So we cook around two times a week, go to a food court around 3 times a week and go out for dinner in more comfy, cosy (and more expensive) places about twice a week.

My husband is easily bored, so he likes to go then to different restaurants as much as possible. In Singapore that is not a difficult task with the numerous F&B options.
He is also quite the meat-lover, in particular beef/steaks.
Let me share two meat-y experiences with you.

First we went to Lawry’s - The Prime Rib restaurant at Mandarin Orchard. It was the first time we had dinner there.

Formal setting, quite ‘dark’ ambiance.

The food (beef, obviously) was very good. No complaints about that. But the ambiance is not my cup of tea.

Steak and piece of yorkshire pudding (which is in fact a kind of pastry/bread)

The place is pretty formal, with waitresses in old-fashioned, stiff costumes. The cook comes to your table with a mobile kitchen to prepare your steak and a waitress puts the dressing on your salad with spinning surfaces and big gestures as if she is performing a circus-act. Unfortunately the salad itself is nothing much, ingredients-wise and taste-wise.

Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind a bit of theatre at my table at all. But I prefer it in a fun, original or colorful way, rather then in a pompous posh way.
And they have no french fries!!! I love french fries. I want french fries!

Hey, they are wearing their headgear backwards…hahaha… Doesn’t their attire look like the nurses in One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest?
That does not mean that we did not enjoy our evening though! As long as I am with my sweetheart and the food is good, then I have a good time no matter what;-).
Bubbles mix.

My parents loooove those kind of posh places and took us there often. I guess that’s where my resentment grew and grew.

Are you familiar with these restaurants where you cannot move a pinkie without a waiter popping out of nowhere, ‘helping’ you out, making you feel very self aware and totally uncomfortable? Where each course is served by a waiter who lifts a big silver dome of your plate, revealing three pees and a piece of meat the size of a dime, calling that nouvelle cuisine and charging you a fortune? Where those three pees and that sliver of meat are described to you in 17 long sentences, including words like ‘an explosion of greens, accompanied by the beautiful contrast of a wild taste’ and ’round, smooth structures that go along so astonishing with the raw substance of bla bla bla…’?
Yawn, bla, fake, pretentious, hate it!

So it comes as no surprise that I much preferred our other dinner. The one at &MADE- The Steak and Fries Bistro. The food there is great too (thanks to star-chef Bruno Menard) with a lot more choices. Like fries! And trufle fries. And more fries!

And…and ….and the decor of the place is super cool ! See for yourself! Cool, fun, delicious and unpretentious; totally up my alley.

Which restaurant do you prefer? Are you a fan of chic dining? Or are you in favor of laid back ambiances?
