Taksu Gallery Singapore
The other day I passed by Taksu gallery in Chip Bee Gardens, near Holland Village. Intrigued by what I saw in the window I decided to go inside and have a closer look.

Artist Norberto Roldan from the Philippines
I discovered that at the moment Taksu Gallery features Norberto Roldan, a Philippino artist. It was his art that had caught my eye.

Admiring the collages and cigar box art by Roldan at Taksu Gallery.
Contemporary art meets anthropology
Roldan’s art ticks a lot of my boxes.
For starters he mentions that his art has an anthropological element in it, in which he uses (found) objects to create new narratives. You probably know by now that I often see and behave myself as an antrhopologist, so that’s one reason why his art speaks to me.

Ingredients and elements
The art of Roldan that is on display -and for sale, I guess- at Taksu has ingredients, elements and functions as:
memory boxes, collages, found objects, cigar boxes, secular images, softdrink bottle crowns, assemblage, amulets and old photographs.

Memory box

You can see why it ticks so many of my boxes, right? Religious artefacts, a kitsch factor, collage….

Big framed panels with memory boxes.

If I had money to buy art, I would not mind buying some of these works by Norberto Roldan. I really like them
What is it about?
The above works have titles like:
-fugutives from years of captivity
-vanity fair
-prayers for the natives
You can find out more about Norberto Roldan and about his art in this interview and by checking out his bio and portfolio from Taksu here.
Recently the Guggenheim bought one of his works.
So what do you think of the art of Roldan? Can you appreciate it? Or do you consider it as 3D scrapbooking that every hoarder could do with his or her loot?
Leuk
What a cool exhibit. Each box is its own little world.

Exactly, that how I see it too, Suzanne!
