Museums in Zwolle

February 19, 2017

Zwolle has some interesting museums. Unfortunately they were ‘in between’ exhibits at the time I visited Zwolle, so I did not have a chance to check them out.

That doesn’t mean I can’t tell you all you need to know though!

Museums in Zwolle

Museum De Fundatie

Zwolle’s most famous and interesting museum is Museum De Fundatie, translating as Museum The Foundation.

Museum De Fundatie in Zwolle is a unique building |curlytraveller.com

The building is very special from the outside.

As I said, I was not able to check it out inside. Too bad, because the views from the ellipse-shaped structure on top of the museum supposedly are beautiful.

I hope that next time I visit Zwolle, they will have some interesting art on display.

The ellips shape is covered by mosaic pieces.

The Museum has a second location; Nijenhuis Castle in Heino. This beautiful old manor has art on it’s walls (indoors) and sculptures in the attractive gardens that surround it.

Stedelijk Museum Zwolle

Zwolle’s other museum, Stedelijk Museum Zwolle, focusses on the cultural heritage of the city.

Part of the museum is the Drostenhuis, right in the centre of Zwolle. It’s one of the finest houses in town. This charming house was built in 1551. You can visit the house and travel back in time, wandering through the different style rooms of the house. The interior decoration reflects daily living in the 18th century.

Waanders in de Broeren and Anningahof

As I mentioned in my post about bookstore Waanders in de Broeren they have a small exhibition space on their top floor.

Sculpture Garden Anningahof seems to be a nice small garden to visit.

I visited Waanders, but Museum De Fundatie, Stedelijk Museum Zwolle, Anningahof, Nijenhof Castle and Drostenhuis I did not get to visit.

So still things to check-out when I re-visit Zwolle;-)!

Obscure museums

Further more, Zwolle apparently has a Bonami Gamecomputer museum and a Saint Nicolas Museum. No idea if they are any good….

Street art Zwolle

I looked for street art in Zwolle, as I always do wherever I go, and I found a few examples, but not a whole lot.

The ones I found seemed commissioned pieces. It doesn’t make them any less nice, I think.

It was a short visit and it was frikkin’ cold, so I did not search for street art endlessly. I guess that there is more, but I did not find more.

Have you visited any of the museums or sculpture gardens that are mentioned in this post? Which is your favourite?

Do you know any good spots in Zwolle to find street art?

Great photos, Anja. Too bad that museum was between shows though. The egg thing on top of the building is so unexpected and intriguing! - as a museum should be. Vancouver’s main downtown art gallery (museum) doesn’t have an egg but it has boats on the roof.

Boats on the roof sound cool too! I don’t remember that from my visit to Vancouver, which was something like between 12 to 15 years ago. Then again I was with my parents then (and my boyfriend of the time) and they are not into museums, so I guess we skipped them all together that trip. Something then for my next trip to Vancouver, whenever that will be…
