A view to die for
High on the cliffs, the views over the Tasman Sea are spectacular, at Waverley Cemetery in Bronte, Sydney.
It’s ‘residents’, buried in 50.000 graves, spread out over 40 acres, are oblivious, I suppose. May they rest in peace on their prime location.
Famous
The cemetery is 130 years old, has several graves of historically important people, has starred in a number of films and TV-series and is interesting for it’s Stonemasonry and funerary art.
Coastal walk
If you do the Bondi -Bronte - Coogee coastal walk (I wrote about that walk here), you automatically pass Waverley Cemetery.
Unfortunately the easy access has also lead to an ongoing problem with vandalism, which is a real shame.
If you are ‘into’ cemeteries, like I am, be sure to take some time to explore this enormous cemetery.
After which you can pick up (your walk) where you left off.
After visiting Waverley Cemetery in Bronte it immediately found it’s spot in my top ten of cemeteries. This is mainly thanks to it’s fantastic location, the size of the cemetery and the funerary art.
Here’s my complete list (for now):

6. Waverley Cemetery, Bronte, Australia
5. Colon Cemetery, Havana, Cuba
4. Bukit Brown Cemetery, Singapore
3. Cimitiere du Pere-Lachaise, Paris, France
2. La Recoleta Cemetery, Buenos Aires, Argentina
1. Cimitero Monumentale, Milano, Italy
And this is my cemetery bucket-list:

Do you have a fascination for graveyards? Which ones are your favorites? Have you visited any of the ones from my two lists?

What a view! I can see why it is one of your favourites.
There is a great one in Halifax high on a hill. I don’t remember the name.
I’m always fascinated by graveyards.

Is it Fairview Lawn Cemetery? With victims of the Titanic? (No, I did not know that;-). Googled it though…)
One day we’ll go graveyard exploring together, okay?!
Great title!!! LOL Great view. I am also interested in cemetaries. I went to Europe’s largest one in Milan. Incredible what people “need” after they are dead.
Greetje
Yes, that’s indeed pretty amazing. Milan’s cemetery is like an open air museum. Architecture, sculptures, mosaics….beautiful!
