Exciting contemporary Asian art in White Rabbit Gallery, Sydney

May 10, 2015

Sydney has several interesting musea and galleries. White Rabbit Gallery in Chippendale, Sydney, is definitely one of the more innovative and exciting ones.

This is a loud installation. It’s named One Kind of Behaviour and it is a mechanical orchestra of buckets. The metal buckets are wired, so that they go up and down, causing loud bangs.

Contemporary Chinese art; exciting and strange

The gallery is focussed on 21st century Chinese art, like these art works:

The White Rabbit Gallery spreads out over four floors and the whole set up is spacious.

I love it when a gallery has an unorthodox lay-out and way of displaying, instead of the usual, boring empty space with art on the walls. Some of the displayed works even went through ceilings and floors!

This huge cigaret went through the ceiling and the other end came up on the floor above.

On the ground floor are an Asian restaurant and a small giftshop.

Currently: State of Play

The gallery has 400 artists in its collection and changes the exhibited works twice per year.

The ongoing exhibition is titled State of Play and is on until august 2015, so you can still catch it.

The works vary from themes coming from innocent children’s play to darker adult play and games;-).

This is some of the art that is now on display in the White Rabbit Gallery:

I wouldn’t mind that tapestry on one of my walls. But I prefer my own bed, that I can actually sleep in. Hahaha… Seriously: as art I love it!

One can only appreciate this artwork, when one knows the concept behind it. And even then, it will not become a favorite of mine.

Several art works were quite explicit and with sexual connotations. Interesting though…

Seemingly serious, black leather suitcases are in fact interpretations of sex-items and S&M parafernalia.

Another art work that -like the giant cigarette- goes through ceilings and floors, thus appearing in two floors of the gallery.

I really enjoyed my visit to the White Rabbit Gallery and highly recommend it. Be sure to check it out when you are in the neighbourhood!

I think the top two artworks are my favourite. The balloon in the cage might not be a favourite, but I often get that feeling, so I recognize it very well.
It is a fantastic display of art. Too much to really take in in one visit.

I think ‘conceptual art’ often gets mixed responses. Either you ‘get’ it and love it, or you find it too ‘thought of’ and it doesn’t touch you.

I think I would have loved this place.

The balloon in the cage is wild. I love art that plays with your emotions.

I’m sure you would have loved this gallery and the exhibit, Suzanne. How surprising that it is the balloon that triggered you most!
