Georgetown Steel Rod Sculptures

January 11, 2014

There is more to see on Georgetown’s walls then the fabulous mural paintings that I showed you here and here.

Througout the city center you find steel rod sculptures like this one:

So what’s the story?

The Steel Rod Sculptures are caricatures, placed on historic places in Georgetown by KL based company Sculpture at Work.
They were commissioned by the local government in order to make the history of Georgetown easy to grasp for locals and tourists, old and young.

Local artists made the cartoons, after which Sculpture at Work turned them into Steel Rod Sculptures.

And they are indeed informative in an accessible and funny way.

Ordering as if you are at some Starbucks, translated by the waitress with a simple: “Coffeeee!”.
Who knew?! Jimmy Choo started here?!
Remember when I explained the principle of the 5-foot-alleys? Here it is less then 5 foot wide and the Steel Rod Sculpture tells us about that.
Having mistresses is from all times and all places, as is shown here.
What a smart, simple idea, from those pawnshop owners!
Some of the sculptures are really funny, like this one.
This one is funny too. About the fire brigade. Integrating that fire hose. I always like it when 3D and 2D are mixed in one work of art.

What do you think of these historic, educational sculptures? Do you like this style? Do you think it adds value for visitors?
