Chinese New Year 2014 is coming up!

January 8, 2014

It’s that time of the year again: Chinese New Year is coming up!
The official date for 2014 is january 31st and it is the Year of the Wooden Horse.

As in other years, the light up and festive program starts earlier, in this case it starts the 11th of january.

I am looking forward to see all the decorations. Especially in Chinatown. And the daily shows at Kreta Ayer square are sometimes very interesting too.

Hopefully there will be an attractive Hongbao site on the Float this year.
Both the decorations and Hongbao can be very different each year. I mean in terms of how pretty it is done. We had some very disappointing years and some years with gorgeous displays.

I will keep you posted.

We went to Chinatown to look at the street decorations and to buy ourselves some little horses for in our home.

I have to say that the huge Horse lanterns on Eu Tong Sen street are absolutely gorgeous. Ofcourse they are not lit up yet. But when they are, I am sure it will be a spectacular sight!

Impressive, right?!
A second XXXL horse!
What!? There’s a whole herd galloping towards us!
Brilliant! It is as if they fly through the sky.
You can go up the crossover bridge and enjoy being almost at the same level as the horses, providing another look.
See how beautiful they are made?
Often Chinese lantern makers are flown in, who have lots of expertise and skills to make these giant lanterns. They first make a metal frame. Then, a silk cover is attached to the frame. In this case inside the horses are lights, of course. Since the ribbons around them are flat, they have strings of lights attached on their outskirts.
I guess that these huge coins have lights inside as well.

Are you celebrating Chinese New Year? Have you ever celebrated it the local way? How was it? Did you enjoy it?

So cool. I can’t wait to see the photos of them lit up.

The only thing people do around here for Chinese New Year is go and eat at Mandarin, this extra big Chinese buffet that I’ve never gone to.

We do have a large China Town in Toronto so I bet they do something there for it. Nothing as spectacular as this though.

    bisous

Oh, I am sure that it will be celebrated in Chinatown in Toronto! With firecrackers and Liondances at the least.

Looking forward to the light up here as well! Will keep you posted;-)

Looking at these horses I would never guess they are lanterns. Very impressive! And I can imagine how incredible they will look when lit up.
