2 Degree Ice Art

January 15, 2014

At the moment there is an exhibition going on in Singapore, named “2 Degree Ice Art”.

We visited it and were quite disappointed.

At the entrance your picture is taken in front of a green screen.
When you exit you can purchase a print on which they applied a background.

The exhibit is small, the hall where the ice sculptures are displayed is ugly, many of the sculptures are crude and the entry price is steep.

Ugly hall and carpeting takes away the ambiance.
E.g. Sir Stamford Raffles seems quite rudimentary shaped and not really detailed.

Is there nothing positive to say about this exhibition then? Ofcourse there is!

If you are local and rarely have a chance to experience cold, ice and ice sliding, then this is your chance. It is -15 degrees in the hall, so it sure is coooooold!!!
We were freezing, despite that we rented the coats and gloves that are available. AND we were wearing trousers, long sleeves and closed shoes with socks.

Frits slides down in his charming blue coat. My black one was even less flattering. But who cares; you really need it!

There were still some visitors that apparently had no clue how cold minus 15 really is, so they came in summer attire. I don’t understand how they managed; they must have been so cold!!!

How can they still smile? And they hold on to the ice with their bare hands!!!
Their young love must be keeping them warm;-).
This visitor too wears only thin sandals, while posing as a dinosaur.

Even our cameras were frozen and it took them about half an hour or so (after leaving the exhibit) to get back to normal. Until then, the lenses were heavily condensed due to the more then 40 degrees difference in temperature.

Also the displayed ice art is not all bad. There are some nice, more detailed pieces. The works where colored ice is used are very unusual. Other times led lights have been incorporated, providing poetic light schemes. Also the lighting is atmospheric.

It’s just that you are at the end when you feel you barely started. And that uninspiring hall with that ugly carpeting gives the whole ambiance a cheap look.

Let’s look at some of the works and judge for yourself.

No, the walls are not melting down;-).
Singapore’s Merlion
Paris’ Eiffel Tower
Yangon’s Karaweik Palace.
Hope to see that with my own eyes in 2014!
It’s Xmas time….
Brussel’s Manneken Pis.
We have seen the real deal many times in Brussels. It translates as Little Man Peeing. Hence his small weener… LOL
This ice sculpture e.g. is not very nicely done, imho.
Xmas deer.
Egypt
NY’s Statue of Liberty. Also not very well done, I find.
This one is nice and quite detailed.
Orange ice; special!
Visitor imitating the dinosaur next to him.
Frits is gonna put his hand in the mouth of this T-rex or whatever animal it is….

So what do you think? Still eager to check it out for yourself? Then do! But be sure to dress warm enough! Let me know what your experience was and wether you enjoyed it.

Imagine, it was -31 for us here last week!

Those people wearing shorts are crazy. I’m sure they got sick afterwards.

The only one I really liked was the orange ice.

They have much better ones in Quebec City in the winter for Carnival. Did you go to that when you lived in Quebec?

    bisous

Hey, you are back, so apparently feeling well enough to comment again! That’s great!

-31! Yeah, we had that sometimes in Montreal. Brrrr…. Layers, layers, layers!

I agree fully that this exhibit was disappointing:-(. Unfortunately I never got around to see the ice sculptures in Quebec City. Must be beautiful!

Great capture of the young people in summer clothes. I was truly tickled. Was wondering whether to catch this exhibit but the price is rather steep. I do love the cold though.
