Art at The Esplanade

November 27, 2013

Do you ever go to Singapore’s theatre- and concert venue The Esplanade? If so, did you ever pay attention to the art installations at the Concourse and on the ceilings of the passages to the shops and restaurants?

I do and did and I can recommend to go and have a look every now and then.

The art installations change regularly. You might find some more interesting and more to your liking then others, but it’s free, so it’s worth a try.

Here are just some of the art installations that I saw there over the last years:

The first installation seeks attention for stray cats and dogs. They are painted with parts of Singapore’s national flag on them, since a quote from one of Singapore’s ministers gave inspiration for this work.

Can I take them all home, please?!
Cute overload!

Cool, isn’t it? Curious to know if it had any effect on the amount of strays that are adopted…

The following one is inspired by deforestation problems, birds, children, the future and hope.

The third one is related to the at that time ongoing DANCE festival.

Mosaic-ed ‘dancers’ were floating round on the ceilings. A pretty sight….

There are free concerts, dances and small shows on the Concourse regularly, also very worthwhile. Check out the Esplanade website and calendar for more information.

Oh, and by the way, the Esplanade itself is a beautiful building. I wrote about it here. For long it used to be THE architectural landmark of Singapore. (Nowadays that is Marina Bay Sands)
The Esplanade is Singapore’s answer to Sydney’s Opera House.

The spiked roofs look spectacular and are responsible for the Esplanade’s nickname The Durian. Have a look at the building and at the fruit named durian and you will see why;-)!

If ever you visit Singapore be sure to have a look at the Esplanade (and the Marina Bay area). There are guided tours inside the building. I have to admit that I -so far- never got around to participating in one myself.
When I do, I promise that I will show you around via a blogpost as well, ok?

To get back on topic: which of the above art works is your favorite?
