Qing Shan Temple, Taipei

August 29, 2013

Not far from Long Shan Temple is the much smaller, quieter and less known Qing Shan Temple.

It took a bit of time and effort to find this temple, mainly because of the language barrier, but we succeeded.

This temple is well worth the search and visit, because it is very special and beautiful.

The temple was built in 1854. It has a beautiful octagonal ceiling and three levels stuffed with very unusual deities. The deities are wearing exuberant clothes and enormous headgear. They carry feather hand fans and have the longest eyebrows ever seen.

Did I say a word too much? Quite eccentric and spectacular, right?!

Oh yeah, the feather fans… Here they are:

As in many other temples, there are gorgeous ‘chien nien'(meaning: cut and glue) ceramics to be seen on the roofs of this temple. Pretty well maintained too.

It’s like a 3D storybook, about chinese tales, legends and folk stories. The details and colors are so vivid; love it!

How about you? Do you visit temples and churches when you travel? Do you, like me, love religious architecture and artifacts?
What was the most impressive religious site that you visited?

And do you happen to know more about the background of the long eyebrows and of the feather fans? I would love to know more about it!
