Pune, part 9: Mahatma Pule Mandai vegetable market

September 5, 2012

Mandai, officially known as Mahathma Phule Mandai, is the biggest vegetable market in Pune City. It is located in heart of Pune in Shukrawar Peth area.

The market has eight entrances and is located next to Tulsi Baugh which is another big market in Pune.Along with vegetables one can also get fruits and articles for Pooja (Hindu worship).

This market was built by the British Government during the Indian pre-independence era. It has about 526 stalls of fruits and vegetables and is often crowded because all fruits and vegetable are available at very low cost.

I have read that this market also has its separate Ganesh Mandal during Ganesh Festival and is famous in Pune and Maharashtra, so I will definitely check that out.

Now for an impression of the market, the colonial building and the veggies inside and around it:

Frits got all enthusiastic seeing all the veggies and fruits and made a whole photo reportage!
Frits the veggie-reporter;-)
Part of the veggies and fruits we know and have in Holland as well, others we don’t. Sometimes we don’t even know what it is and since english is not spoken by many of the vendors here, we still don’t know;-).
Who can tell us what this is???
Looks like a fortress made out of potatoes…hahaha!
Lots of garlic and garlic peelings…

I hope that these products remain available and affordable, because their are a lot of problems reported in the newspapers. Due to the monsoon that is not acting as usual, farmers in agriculture are having a very tough time. The number of suicides amongst them is ridiculously high, in particular the last months, as I read in the newspapers. Very sad:-(.

Anyways, seeing all these beautiful veggies and fruits was a delight for the eyes!
Viva los veggies, people, stay healthy and till tomorrow.
