Parkview Square Building Singapore.

October 12, 2010

Wandering through Singapore I came across a very remarkable building. A skyscraper that would not look out of place in Gotham City (Batman’s hometown).
I am talking about the Parkview Square building, a characteristic, slightly megalomaniac building. Because of it’s sleek, Art Deco-style and ornamentation I thought it was a building from the early 20th century.
My surprise was big when I found out that this building was built less than ten years ago. Very intriguing, that someone built such a building in this day and age!
Parkview Square Building

On top are four giant statues, back and front of the building. They look like knights or robots.
Around the building, on streetlevel, there is a passageway, a front building and a courtyard. Lots of glass, copper and statues of famous people from history.

A few weeks ago we were in the neighborhood, so we decided to check it out. I thought it housed only offices and embassies, but to our surprise, on the groundfloor was a bar! And that bar was open. We went in, had drinks, and were able to have a good look inside the building.

On both sides is a monumental hall, leading to the immense bar in the middle section of the ground floor.
The bar.
Balconies all around, as in a cinema or theatre.
Walls and ceilings covered with carpets with deer and so on. Very pretty. It reminded me a bit of the Tuschinsky cinema in Amsterdam.
When I asked a bartender what the balconies were for, he answered: “Believe me, ma’m, you do not want to know!”. I was so surprised by that answer, that I forgot to ask more;-). It got me very curious, of course! Do you happen to know more about these balconies and what they are used for?
Carpet on ceiling.
Lights, balconies, copper, it all fits together very well.
Suddenly we saw the huge wine cabinet, that went on till the ceiling. We wondered how they could reach the bottles high up. Were there stairs somewhere?
The answer to our question came in the form of this waitress.
She is wearing wings. And then it started to dawn on us. The bar is named Divine.
Next to the bar hang some carabiners…..
…and a thick cable….
…going to a pulley system….
…so if you order a whole bottle, the angelic waitress ‘flies’ up for you, to retrieve your bottle…
We only ordered a glass; that was expensive enough!;-)

The bar lacked ambience because there were almost no customers and the style was a bit pompous and over the top.
Still we were very happy to have visited the bar and to have seen the building from the inside as well. It sure has a certain grandeur and is quite impressive.

Have you ever visited this bar? And have you made the angel fly for wine for you? What do you think of this concept?
