The Sail@Marina Bay #28-08

October 29, 2009

So this is where we live.
A brandnew, luxuirous condominium with all possible facilities in and around it.

There are two towers, that are sail-shaped on one side, hence the name.

You can see that clearly here because of the blue neonlight.

The apartment itself is comfortable yet modest. Like many Singaporeans, we share it with a co-renter. Both him and us, we have our own bed- and bathroom (tiny). The rest of the space (read: extremely small) is communal.

For entering in and moving through the building, as well as your apartment, you need your personal pass with electronic chip. Once inside your apartment, you take of your shoes and leave them outside your front door.
Walking inside with your shoes on is not done in Singapore. You don’t have to be afraid that your shoes will get stolen, because that is unthinkable here. Although…..it DOES seem to happen, sometimes.

We are looking straight at the harbor of Singapore, that you can compare best with Rotterdam; huge freightships are queuing constantly to be let into the harbor for cargo-handling.

View from our apartment at 28 high.

For the rest this area is still in development. That means that we are surrounded by construction sites. They are building huge towers left and right. Construction goes on 24/7. The workers usually come from countries like India and China. At lunchtime they sleep on site and it has been said, that some even ‘live’ on site!

Our views.
The construction goes on right beside our pool area;not so nice.

Construction workers on lunch break.

So not a pretty sight, nor a quiet environment. Inside our apartment it is still ok, but lying at the pool, you better bring your iPod, since the drilling and hammering is very loud and noisy:-(.

The facilities of the condo are great. The pools, for swimming, cooling of and sunbathing. At night it is nice to sit in the hot tub.
There is an aqua fitness pool, there are two tennis courts, a sauna, a gym and a dance studio.

The gym at the 8th floor.

So on one side we have the harbor and construction sites, on the other side we have the Central Business District; the CBD.
Banks and offices. On working days, especially at the beginning and ending of the workday and around lunch, the area is filled with thousands of people. Ideal for people watching;-).

Office people:
The men wear black pants and a shirt, the women wear a sort of cocktail dresses. All look slick and perfect.
Preferred colors for the girls are black, possibly combined with white. Some other ‘modest’ colors, like sand, brown or dark blue. Not many patterns or remarkable colors.
The dresses are very figure hugging. Lots of pencil skirts with a split. No spaghetti straps, no bare backs or cleavages. The length of the dress or skirt is often ultra short. The shoes are often ultra high heeled.
Not a lot of make-up, nor a lot of jewelry.
They look decent and sexy at the same time;-). Their outfits probably cost little, but they look like a million bucks.

Does’nt this girl look like a fashion model?

Around our building are at least 7 coffee places, like Starbucks. In the mornings the queues with office workers are humongous, waiting for their cappuccino’s. At lunch everyone (1000’s of people) leave the office for up to two hours to have their lunch somewhere around the office. Again the queues are unbelievable.
And then, when the work day is over, the MRT (metro) near our building is flooded by people commuting home.

During lunch they all go outside for lunch, chatting or smoking.

We have a MRT station next to us, which is very handy. More about the MRT in my next post.

Now we are of to Ikea, of all places, have a nice day!
