Visiting the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney was so much fun! It is part of the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences (MAAS).
It so happened that I saw the Museum every day from the balcony from our Serviced Apartment at Meriton@Campbell.
I love repurposed old buildings like this. In both my hometowns (Haarlem and Singapore) they have these kind of buildings that got a revamp and a cool destination.
In Haarlem we have the Meterhuis, de Lichtfabriek and Choc-oase, all housed in former power houses or in former factories.
In Singapore there is Powerhouse Station, now a destination for clubbing, eating and drinking.
What is the Powerhouse Museum Sydney all about?
Back to Powerhouse Museum Sydney. Here’s what they say about themselves:
They did not say a word too much in that description. The Museum is all that and more!
The Museum has a big cafe where they serve quality coffee.
In that same area you also find the Museum Shop which has a cool collection of items for you to purchase.
Powerhouse Museum Sydney - entertainment for the whole family
Let’s head over to the actual Museum.
When you step inside, the pure scale and diversity of it all impresses instantly. There are different floors and spaces and there’s something to see (and do) everywhere for everyone. We loved the Museum, but kids will love it too!
There are trains, planes and automobiles, No, really, I’m not joking! There are even space shuttles and such.
Don’t miss these temporary exhibits!
The temporary exhibits that were on when we went to the Museum were magnificent. They were very complete, interesting and well executed.
There was (and still is, until july 12th 2015, so be quick!): ‘Undressed, 350 years of Underwear in Fashion.’
No pictures were allowed, but believe me, it is well worth a visit!
Then there was (and still is; also ends july 19th): ‘Recollect shoes’.
This exhibit is massive. Seriously! I was amazed. Such a huge collection and so much history. A must-see for everyone interested in fashion and shoes.
Further there were exhibits about innovative design, new fashion talents and quirky toy-machineries.

This exhibit is no longer on. Too bad, since it was so much fun. I would gladly have taken all the items home with me and surround myself with them in my living room.
I really recommend this museum!
It’s educational, entertaining and it stays interesting with all it’s temporary exhibits. It makes it one of those museums that you want to visit again and again. Never a dull moment there!
This looks like such a blast! I would have loved to have visited with you.
I’m drooling over the shoes.
Those last eclectic pieces, especially “It’ll never fly” really made me smile.
