The Bearded Tit - Sydney’s quirkiest bar

April 15, 2015

While exploring Redfern, we stumbled upon the most unusual, bizar, cool and quirky bar: The Bearded Tit, named after a song bird with that name. They (cl-)aim to be more than just a bar. The Bearded Tit wants to be a Happy Place, an Art Gallery and a Creative Space for artists and creative people.

The Bearded Tit Bar and the street art alley besides it.

You find the bar on St. Regent Street, only a three-minute walk from Redfern Station. Actually we first spotted the street art in the alley besides the bar and walked into the alley to check that out.

Luckily Frits then said: “Hey, we should check out this cafe here; it looks very unusual.” I might have overlooked it otherwise!

The three owners of the place have done the most amazing job with the interior decorating. You can look around for an hour and spot other funny, artsy and quirky nooks, details and things all the time. It is totally my cup of tea with all it’s kitsch, art and the sense of humor in all of it.
I asked the blue-haired, tattoos waitress if I could move in and live there, please;-). To which she replied with a “Sure, why not.” Hahaha….

If you look closely, you can see the cute waitress with the blue hair and lots of tattoos at the back behind the bar.

The Bearded Tit serves beers and cocktails. Food can be ordered from neighbourhood restaurants that deliver to the bar.

In the interior there are lots of taxidermy items. (Green with envy!) But with a twist. Like the back end of a deer, upside down attached to the ceiling, with a red bow on her tail. Or a boar with a trumpet in its mouth.

Frits with a “Where am I?” look on his face;-).

Very inspiring for me, to see that the decorators let their imagination and creativity run wild. They went where I would love to go, but I don’t. I’m holding back. I don’t let my crazy roam free. And when I do, like when I painted a doll indigo blue and hung her in a (dead) tree in my garden, people freak out.
Now that should not bother me at all, but since I have people house-sitting regularly, I don’t want to upset them. Also, the Dutch climate is not very kind to outdoor decorations.
Inside the house though, that should not be a problem, and when I don’t have house-sitters any longer, I may go overboard. Yay!
So many ideas, so little time….but it’s already nice to think about it and to phantasize;-).

Now just sit back and look at my pictures; enjoy:

The restrooms are something special too!

I have one and a half mannequins at home, with which I can do so much more than I did so far! Inspired!

This actually looks like my house. I’m serious!

When in the neighborhood I would surely recommend a visit to The Bearded Tit. You will be amazed!

I learn a lot about other countries from blogs. Often there is beautiful scenery. I really enjoy seeing how others live, where they go, and what they do and this is definitely some place I’d go often if I lived nearby. Thanks.

Well I can see why you loved it so much. It really reminds me of your house.

I’m not a fan of once live animals hanging on the walls, but what they did to them to turn them into art was cool. I also really like that painting on top of a painting idea. So unique. Lots of great ideas here. I’m sure you were taking notes!

    bisous

I understand where you’re coming from, Suz, regarding taxidermy. Being a fervid animal lover, I am against hunting for fun and stuff like that. Over the years I have sort of understood that there is a good and necessary point to some hunting, like keeping populations healthy. But I still don’t understand nor like the idea of killing for fun.
Surprisingly- also to myself- I seem not to have a moral nor emotional problem with these animals on the wall, assuming they were not killed for this purpose.

And yes, in my mind I took notes, hahaha!

Such a shame Frits is not working in Sydney. You could contribute to the bar with your art. It would fit like a dream.
Curious to see what you eill come up with at home aha.
