The storks of Marrakech

January 26, 2015

A remarkable phenomenon in Marrakech are it’s storks. You can see them and their huge nests all over the Medina of Marrakech.

Storks as transformed humans

The storks of Marrakech are considered to be holy animals. In the old days, the Berbers believed the storks to be transformed humans. To this day it is forbidden to disturb a stork and who does so, risks three months in jail.

Untill a few years ago there was a hospital for ill, wounded and dying storks, but that seems no longer there.

Best places to observe and photograph storks in Marrakech

A sure place to spot storks is on the high ruin walls of Badi Palace. As you can see on my pictures, they are quite far away there, for taking a decent picture. Unless you have a big and good zoom lens, of course.

An easier and more comfortable place to see, observe, hear (!) and photograph the storks is from the rooftop of Kozy Bar, overlooking the Place des Ferblantiers with it’s palm trees and pretty lanterns.

How cool; these tiles with a stork tile in the middle.

Kozy Bar is also a nice place to have dinner and for (alcoholic) drinks.

Herons versus storks

In Holland we have a lot of herons. They are considered to be very common birds. Storks though are rare, so I’m always quite excited whenever I see one.
Strange, actually, that two birds who look quite similar can cause a totally different level of excitement in a bird-watcher;-).

Do you have herons and storks in your country? Are you a bird-watcher?
