Living around Orchard. Never a dull moment.

June 22, 2014

The Beaumont, our condo, is located very near to Orchard Road, Singapore’s most famous road. You can see it as the equivalent of New York’s Fifth Avenue, lined with trees and glossy shopping malls.

See how wide the sidewalk is? With huge malls on one side and huge trees on the other side.
Next to that a four lane road and on the other side of that road the same lay-out.

Even though I am not really into middle to high end shopping malls, I still enjoy Orchard.

The sidewalks are very wide, making it a nice strip for a leisurely stroll.

Be aware for the colonies of birds though. Every evening, from 6.45 onwards, flocks of mynah’s (type of starling) congregate in the trees and roost there for the night. They sh*t a lot, so watch out for their droppings! You don’t want them on you now, do you? As soon as dawn sets in, these birds start squawking, creating a deafening noise. Unbelievable!!! You have to hear it for yourself to understand what I’m talking about.

Off peak hours there is a lot of space. And yes, we see sailors. After all Singapore is a major harbor city, right?
Even at 10 p.m. Orchard is bustling with activity and people. With 27 degrees it is then very nice for a stroll.
People queue up to buy ice-cream….
…or a late night kebab…

…or they practice their dance moves, since it is way cooler then during the day.

But other then that, there is ample space to walk, with lots of opportunities to do some serious window-shopping, look at the crowd (how do they dress, who are they, what are they doing), catch street artists, take pictures, sit on a bench and/or have a bite or a drink.

In my imagination these are two ex-chinese state-circus artists. One got a bit too fat, and maybe they are just not good enough for the circus any longer. (They were pretty awesome by the way.) So now they make money on the streets of Singapore.
True? No clue; just made it up…
Oh, and in my story, the woman on the bench behind them is there mother and coach;-).
Trompe-‘l oeuil- carpet for taking pictures. We had fun with it.
Real people additioned to the uni-colored statues before ION Orchard.
Girls and musicians in orange for Nescafe…
Oh, hey, there are two Spidermen at the cross over!….
…and a live alarm clock…

…and two supa-hero-doggies…

Women dressed tip-top, carrying real designer bags.
Woman in cute dress.
White stockings, hmmm, not so hot…
Shorts with veiled maxi skirt. Cool!
Butt cheeks revealed; skanky.
Princess?

The shop-windows tend to be done up in a beautiful, original way with unaffordable, but pretty merchandise.

I seriously thought about buying the blue-lavender necklace; love it!
These sneakers are insane!
…as are these hats!
This man’s jacket is cool too.
And these suitcases are gorgeous.
Fun animal flats.
Bought two pairs of these shwings.
Cool mannequin in shop.
Even cooler live-sized bear.
Looooove these shark-hoodies!
Nice art-gallerie-shop MAD.
Great umbrella, although I would not walk with it, probably;-).
Flower display shop window.
Unusual men’s shoes; so very ugly! Hahaha…
Love this H&M window display; the wigs are too cool!
Fish-suitcase-fish;-).

During Christmas, Orchard Road is abundantly decorated, as are the malls (inside). One year I like it more then another year, but overall it is fun to check out all the different trees.

Tree of macaroons,…
…of Ferrero Rocher,…
of teddybears,…
and classic….

There are two MRT stations: ION Orchard and Somerset.

And the number of F&B options is uncountable. Not only expensive restaurants, by the way, but also very cheap food courts and everything in between. Indoor and outdoor. Ground floor, basement and high up. Whatever cuisine you might be looking for is there.

One out of a zillion eateries around Orchard.

I hope to have many more surprising encounters, beautiful shop windows and relaxing strolls along Orchard Road!

This was my latest surprise encounter: Pop up store from messaging app LINE. I happened to already have some of their stickers, so seeing these figurines in XXL format was cool!

Do you like the Orchard area? What is your favorite thing to do there? And what was the most special thing or person you ever saw or did on Orchard?

Ahhh, it was nice to see familiar places…I always liked shopping or at least window-shopping at the Orchard Road.
