Penang’s Temples. Malaysia.

March 9, 2014

Maybe weird for an atheist, but I really enjoy visiting temples and churches.

My reasons to visit them are artistic and aesthetic, and because I am interested in rituals and other cultures.

So when we visited Georgetown on Penang, Malaysia, we also explored it’s temples. And Penang, being multi-cultural, like Singapore, sure has a lot of them!

I showed you the Kek Lok Si Temple here, here and here.

In addition to that I could now show you all 254 pictures I took in all the other places of worship in Georgetown;-), but instead of boring you to death with that, I selected my 18 best, in random order.

I love this lantern!

The color red is seen a lot in Chinese temples.
So is incense.
Fascinating how they dress up their deities for special occasions.
Detail of an entrance gate. This one was so elaborately and exquisitely decorated that I was in awe.
Tigers, lions and dragons are some of the creatures that you see a lot in chinese temples.
This is a strange meters high Indian deity. Do you see the small head in his hair? And that small head has some (real) weeds in his mouth.
No idea what all that is about.
The big guy that we just saw, stands at the foot of a hill. On top of that hill would be the Indian temple that we wanted to visit. So we started climbing. It was a long, steep climb.
And it was hot and humid! I huffed and I puffed and I sweated and I thought my head and heart would explode….and then there was this stupid sign! Hold your quasi-deep words for yourself, please, and give me an escalator!!! 😉
….and then it turned out that the temple was in decay and under renovation, so a new one was built…twice as high…
SO NOT worth every step (remember the sign?!).
Frits reached that new temple quite effortlessly; I gave up halfway.
What a charming sight!
That’s what the centre of Georgetown is like. Cute houses, temples, bars, restaurants and people biking. Did I mention that I fell in love with Penang?;-)
Dangerous lion at Indian temple. Missing a tooth, but with yellow flower on his head;-).
The 3D golden decorations on this painting are very unusual; first time I saw that.
This temple-in-neglect is very appealing, don’t you think?

Do you like to visit temples and churches? What is it that draws you to them?

Ha! That little head with the weeds in the mouth really made me laugh.

That is too bad about the climb all for nothing. At least you stopped halfway.

I do love that last photo. The colours and atmosphere are fantastic.

Yes, those weeds in that mouth were kinda weird and puzzling;-). Nice that you can appreciate an atmosphere like in the last picture as well!
