Singapore Biennale 2013. Part 2

February 8, 2014

I showed you some art from Singapore’s Biennale 2013 here. Let’s explore some more works, shall we?

This one appealed to me a lot for various reasons.

What you see is a huge room filled with dolls on sticks. Like a doll garden, with a small shed in the middle.

It looks like some outsider art and it also looks like something that I could and would make in my garden.

I am collecting (Barbie-)dolls from thrift shops since years for a project like this. I painted one doll blue with silver dots and hung it on a tree in my garden, but visitors and tenants find it scary and my last tenant took it down. I understand…. I will keep it for later, when I have a larger garden. As you may know, my dream for my retirement is a spanish plot of land with room for all my quirky ideas;-).

But I am drifting; back to topic.

This art piece is called Payatas by Oscar Villamiel.

He collected thousands of dolls from a landfill in Manilla named Payatas. On this giant garbage dump 200.000 people are living and working! Also children. This art work is about humanity, about hope and about recycling.

One of the most fascinating art works of this Biennale at the SAM is named Peace can be realized even without order by Teamlab from Japan.

It is an interactive digital installation with images, movement and sound. With motion sensors and interaction. You walk through a pitch black space, amongst life-sized digital figurines. There are a lot of them projected and mirrors make it look like even more.

It is as if you are walking through a forest of moving, responding, digital images and sound. Really special!

Three visitors surrounded by digital creatures.

The following room is colorful and eclectic, filled with a lot of works by many artists: Tiw-Tiwong by AX(iS) Art Project from the Philippines.

It’s too much and divers to describe, so I guess that you just have to check it out yourself;-).

I specifically liked this table, with the benches and dogs, and I felt very tempted to play the old record player and sing along. But it looked not connected. Too bad!

There was another art work, a video, at which I was singing loudly, karaoke style. Fortunately there are no recordings or images of that;-)!

Sabine and I sat here for a short while, while she made pictures with her phone.

So what do you think? Like any of the art works?

The Biennale is almost finishing, so if you want to check it out, you better go right away!
