Kerala Truck Art

April 19, 2013

During my 6 months in India in different cities and states I came across a lot of decorated trucks. Unfortunately none of them came even close to what I had seen on pictures from Pakistani trucks. Those are totally wow and over the top. Love them! Although I do not expect ever to see one with my own eyes, since I have no plans what so ever to visit Pakistan.

Pakistani Truck. To be clear: this picture is not taken by me. It is ‘borrowed’ from WikiMedia Commons. Thanks to the photographer. What a fantastic picture!

So what a nice surprise, when we visited Kerala, to find out that their trucks are gorgeous as well! Not as spectacular as what I saw on the web from Pakistan, but very, very beautiful too!

I could have ‘collected’ them photographically for days, but instead I had to take my pics in 5 minutes;-).

Here they are:

So the hood of the car is of course made of metal material and painted. The ‘head board’, little door and sides are made of wood. That wood is partly carved and it is painted. The roster in front is often painted as well, like here with a big eagle.
This one has a mosque on the roster. The word on the head board is regularly a religious name, but other things are possible as well.
This one has to be my favorite. The neon colors are so pretty and happy. And that roaring tiger is cool too!
In between the flowery motifs we see miniatures of landscapes as well as proverbs.
“Man proposes, god disposes” and “Prayer is Power”.
This one even has his mobile phone number painted in;-).
Motifs of flora and fauna are popular as well, next to religious themes.
“Save oil, save India”.

People who know me a bit, will understand that this truck art is totally up my alley! My heart jumps when I see these in abundance. After photographing these around noon, my day was already a big success. The rest was just a bonus;-).

By chance I just came across another blogpost around the same theme. She has gorgeous pictures as well. You may want to check her out: Artnlight.
This blogger is from India and her blog is magnificent, full of color, creativity and wonderful pictures!
