Lunchtime in Singapore

September 21, 2011

From 12 till 2 Singapore is on lunch break. Foodcourts, cafes and restaurants are overflowing with customers.
Living in the heart of the CBD, surrounded by office buildings, we see the same picture each day (except on weekends, ofcourse): a stream of thousands of workers fills the streets, the underground malls, the MRT. They stroll, they shop, they talk, they eat. In front of every foodplace in the area long queues of hungry people are formed, waiting to be served.
This is what that looks like:

Hey, one empty table!
Fully booked.
Dresscode? YES;-)
Patiently waiting in line.
And another queue.
Waiters go along the queue to hand out menus so that clientele can already make their choices. Speeds things up.
Passageway MRT.
Queueing to get on the escalator.
All the escalators are filled with people.
Amazing how long this queue is!

And this is what it feels and sounds like. Mind you, by the way, that in the mornings and evenings there is not one inch of free space in this passageway. So in fact, what you see on this short videoclip is not even busy. On the real peak hours you can feel very intimidated by the thick wall of people in here.
As you can understand I usually try to avoid going here during these hours;-).

Do you usually have your lunch at home, as we do, or do you go out as many locals do?
