Voyage Night Festival 2011

After spending the summer (what summer;-)) in the Netherlands I am now back in Singapore. Enjoying life here, in my second hometown.
No more cold days, no more rain…Oops, well, exactly when the nice outdoor Voyage Night festival was scheduled we had rain:-(. Too bad, also for the festival organisation and participants.

I went on fridayevening with two friends and enjoyed myself very much, despite some rain.

Next weekend the festival is on again, with partly the same and partly different shows. The Night Light Festival (lightinstallations around Bras Basah) is on the whole week though.

Yes, we are ready…let the crowd come in….

A dozen of those by artist Lim Shing Ee @Rotunda, National Museum Singapore Twelve large bright red helium balloons are a metaphor for the artists conflicts around her identity, nationality and sense of belonging.

This artwork was later the place where the Eva Quartet performed.

These four ladies, once part of Le Mystere des Voix Bulgares, sang so beautifully! I was TOTALLY WOWED.

Just with their harmonizing voices they sounded enchanting and strong.

The red balloons really worked well in this classical building.

The Fish Tree is part of the Night Light Festival, part of the Voyage Night Festival program. Their colours changed and on the background were projections of fishes. As a sucker for lights and colour I was enchanted by these lightfishes.

Another performance we saw was A Bigger Bang; a group of percussionists. Very swinging and energetic.

There was Bucharest Tango, with singer Oana Catalina Chitu, and with dancers Ng Wai Chung and Andrienne Tho.

Being a tanguera this was a special treat to me. The folky Balkan tango sounded good and the dancers, whom I happen to know from tango in Singapore, gave a small but very nice performance.

Parking Mad (instead of Barking Mad) is a row of parked Volvo’s gone wild. They seem to communicate with eachother with lights inside them going of and on in all sorts of rythms and patterns. Sequintial, synchronised, continious, with breaks…Nice.

In the Courtyard of SAM you find the lightinstalation Curiosites by Alain Benini. This nest of luminous jellyfish gives a fairytale look to the courtyard.

I want this @home, hanging over my garden;-).

Inside SAM this small installation caught my eye. I found it funny. On this…uh…’thing’…this object, a video of a talking head was projected. The object looked like nothing more then an object, but with the projection it came to life and looked like a little man talking.
Fun!

At the Substation we walked into the POPIN workshop.
An artwork-in-progress made of feminine hygiene products. We were kindly invited to join in, but we said no thanks;-).

Another performance by the Eva Quartet. Awestruck by their voices and harmonys again.

And then for the highlight of the festival: Corazon de Angeles by Theater TOL from Belgium.

It really was a feast for the eyes and ears.

They sang a lot of classic and wellknown songs; either opera or tango-ish. And even pure tango. So again a real treat for me. I recognised somebody I know in the show, Moneir. He sang a tangosong and was later biking high up in the sky. Small world, this Singapore.

For the rest it was a lot of playing with light, balloons, feathers, glitter and pyrotechnics. All of which I love.

Angels flying really high in the sky, people riding bikes in a carrousel hanging from a crane, against the beautiful NMS and the dark of the night….pretty, pretty, pretty.
