Piedra Negra

Walking through Haji Lane, Arab Street, etc. I came across a Mexican restaurant, named Piedra Negra. Black stone.

I had not seen it be4 and it turned out to be new and exploited by the same owners from the BluJaz-cafe around the corner. (Also a very nice place, by the way…)

Anyway, I fell right there and then totally in love with Piedra Negra!

The interior decoration has been done by a bunch of artists, lead by an Australian named Jay.

No, unfortunately I do not know his full name nor do I have a link to him or any of the artists involved:-(. If I find out more, I will report it on this blog.

The elements presented seem to come from both Mexico as Spain: day-of-the dead-masks next to a Flamenco-dancer and a Toreador.

I just adore the eclectic approach: there are so many different techniques and materials used:

mosaics, paintings, 2D flawlessly shifting to 3D, metalwork, beads, lanterns, fabric, wiregauze, tiles, plasterwork…you name it.

Mixed, integrated, no boundaries, big imagination… just the way I like it and do myself, when I create stuff.

Looking in. This is the righthand part of the restaurant. Most of the other pics I took were taken inside the lefthand part of the place. (It has two different rooms.)

Already the namesign is gorgeous and eclectic: metal/ironwork, pebbles-mosaic and the horns of the bull are transparent due to the gauze that’s used.

Inside we find another bull, ;painted on the wall (2D) with next to it a Toreador, in both 2D as in 3D.

The bar/counter is decorated with the most special and gorgeous mosaics. Not only porcelain is used, but also beads, wiregauze, sort of clay-sculpting and paint.

What a fantastic idea to use wiregauze to make to skin of the long snake (Serpiente) really look like snakeskin!!!!

So the counter is mosaiced at the bottom, but also the part above the counter is done. Take notice of the funny monkey hanging upside-down.
(And for those of you that know my house and the mosaics I made in my garden: see the porcelain-broken-plate that is used on the right side? I did exactly the same thing, remember?)

I never used beads so far in my own mosaics; great idea. Beautiful effect.

Another bull; gorgeous!

Beads, beads, beads

Above the bar, the centerpiece is formed by a large metal eagle. Maybe a condor?
Here too you see the fluent way 2D and 3D are mixed; one leg is 2D, the other one 3D.
Great expression in the face too.

The wings are decorated with a band of beads, like in the chandelier that we will see later on.

What a chandelier!!!! Would love to have that in my house.
Seems to be constructed from Arabic lanterns, combined with metal, beads and glitterfabric.
