Mid-Autumn @ Gardens by the Bay
The yearly Mid Autumn Festival at Gardens by the Bay is back!

This year with cannibalistic rabbits! This one was trying to eat my finger. Ouch!
Until september 18th you can enjoy the giant lantern displays every night from 7 to 11.

It’s clearly indicated all throughout the gardens where to find the lantern displays. Or just follow the crowds;-).
It’s free and it’s pretty, so don’t miss out.
This year’s theme is ‘Asian stories of the Moon’.

The largest of the lantern displays (not this one) is 27 meters across. Impressive, right?!

Just gorgeous!

The Jade Rabbit

The matchmaker. Look at the people in front to get an idea of the scale of this giant lantern display.

Pointing out pretty flowers whilst there is a matchmaker hanging over my head.

Not sure how the story goes in detail. Does he write down the names of the couples?

Story of The moon and The Sun.

Let there be tigers…

How pretty! All the colors and details!

How awesome is this tiger head? I wouldn’t mind having a head like this in my home as a decorative light!

Walking over a bridge, surrounded by monkeys.

Mimicking a monkey;-).
Ron Arad’s 720°
And there’s more!
There’s also a Colonnade of Lights, a Food Street with yummy snacks, performances, storytelling and last but not least: Ron Arad’s 720°. A multimedia show, presented by SIFA (Singapore International Festival of Arts) at the Meadow in the Gardens. You can watch this show (also for free!) till september 17th. More about it in a separate post.
Word of advice
- slap on mosquito repellent. On top of the usual risk of Dengue, we now also have a Zika problem in Singapore. Serious stuff, people!
- bring water. Although you can buy food and drinks on a few locations within the Gardens, it’s always wise to bring a bottle of water just in case. When we were there it was so hot, even at 10 pm, that I thought I was gonna faint. Or drown in my own sweat;-). I would not have coped without a bottle of water. Really!
- bring a fan or something else that you can use to wave some air into your face
- don’t forget your smartphone or camera
Have you already visited this year’s Mid-Autumn @ Gardens by the Bay? Did you enjoy it? What was your favorite part
I love this! But the sound of that heat makes me feel a bit ill.

I get that. The heat here and especially the humidity is not funny.
Spectacular! Really amazing. I love colourful lights in the dark. Everything looks for perfect - I wonder if they use some sort of computer-aided design to make the patterns. They must, right? They are so correct. Did they have any “bad,” ill-formed lanterns? That would appeal to me too. Thanks for these great shots!
No, there are no ill-formed lanterns. At least I never saw one.
I don’t think they make use of computers, but it’s hard to find a lot of information about the process.
What I did find out is that these lanterns are made by Chinese craftsmen from one specific village in China.
People in that village make lanterns since a long time. Some are the sketchers, others weld the metal frames, again others (hand-) paint the fabric (often silk) that goes on the frame, etc.
Wherever a XXXL-lantern show like the one in this post is held, these Chinese lantern makers are contracted and flown in, all over the world.
It’s pretty amazing!
My style, love it!!!!
Thanks for stopping by and for the kudos.
