Halloween Horror Nights 4 at Universal Studios - my review

In my post about Halloween in Singapore I indicated that I was not that keen on going to one of the Halloween Horror Nights 4 at Universal Studios at Sentosa.
But since my BFF and her boyfriend loved to go there, my husband and me decided to go along.

We met at 6 p.m. at the nearby Hard Rock Cafe, that was in Halloween spirit as well.

The decor definitely looked spooky, but fortunately the mixed fajitas tasted ‘normal’ and delicious as always;-).

After dinner we walked over to Universal Studios. We had purchased tickets online for around SGD 52 per person. My husband and I had not visited the Universal Studios in Singapore before, so it was all new to us.

The Halloween Horror Nights are a yearly event of 13 evenings with a special program and decor. The park is opened for that from 07.30 pm until 01.30 am. When we were there, there was a big crowd, even though it was not sold out.

You receive a map with which you can sort out your own route. It’s up to you wether you follow the numbers or you deviate from them completely. The only thing which is fixed are the play-times from Jack’s Nightmare Circus theater show, so you need to do a bit of planning if you want to catch that.

The opening ceremony includes this monsterly minister of evil descending from the skies.

Tip: after the opening ceremony,head straight over to number 2 on the map -Mati Camp- to beat the worst queues. Be as quick as possible while dealing with all the creepy creatures stalking and haunting you on your way over there.

Although it is impossible to escape the queues entirely. We had to queue up 20 to 40 minutes on average.

Luckily you can purchase drinks everywhere, so no need to get dehydrated or overheated. The skull mugs are cool!

There are ample food options as well.

Oh, and in fact you CAN skip the queues, but then you have to purchase special Express tickets.

Your Halloween Horror Night is going to be filled with a mix of things:

• you roam the spooky streets and areas where you encounter creepy characters.
  I have to say that the costumes and make up are fantastic! The actors play their roles very well. It seems they have been instructed to never touch you, but that does not mean that they will not haunt you and scare the hell out of you!
• You walk from Scare Zone to Scare Zone. There are 4 of those around.
  These pics are taken in the Spooky Fairytales Scare Zone. Rapunzel does not look so hot and there’s something living in her hair!!!
  
• there are 4 Haunted Houses where you walk through. These can be very creepy. You go through narrow passages where fake and live characters are hidden around every corner. Be prepared to scream your lungs out! 3D glasses and 3D illusions, waves of fog, sudden winds and water sprayed on you…it all adds to the scare. A nauseating swaying bridge will make your stomach turn!
• a selection of the permanent rides in the park is open and accessible; enjoy the ride.
• you can see a theater show: Jack’s Nightmare Circus, a small creepy vaudevillesque show. It was entertaining and we were happy to have a seat and rest a bit.
• there are ample photo opps with the demons, ghosts and other creepy creatures that you come across. I must say that getting a good picture can be challenging, since there is not a lot of light. In the end we turned to using our flash, which definitely provides clearer pictures, but which takes away a bit of the spooky atmosphere.
• There is a DJ on site, so you can show off your spooky grooves and dance moves;-).

All in all we had a very entertaining evening with a lot of laughs, scares and screams. The theatrical ambiance of the theme park adds tremendously to the spooky vibe.

We were by far the oldest group amidst thousands of others; most people were in their 20’s and 30’s. We did however not let that hold us back or spoil our fun.

My favorite parts of the evening were:

• the Jack’s 3D Dementia Haunted House. Very colorful and extremely scary. My husband almost tipped over from dizziness when he stood eye to eye with the notorious illusional bridge!
• the Transformer ride; a 3D experience. That was SO cool! Very realistic and intense.

Good to know:

• no costumes and masks allowed
• no children under age 13 (too scary)
• in certain areas you have to place your bags and cameras in a locker
