I already posted a number of posts about our holiday in Goa and about our lovely hotel there.
And after that I wrote some posts about the famous Hindu Festival named Shigmo, here and here.
But during our Goan holiday we did more, like visiting Old Goa.
Goa has been governed by the Portuguese for 500 years. They brought, amongst others, catholicism to Goa. ‘Brought’ sounds quite neutral, but in reality, they forced it upon the population through a real Inquisition. Terror and torture.
That history does not seem to prevent many Goans from nowadays being catholics in heart and soul.
And that also means that there are still a lot of churches left from the Portuguese era.
E.g. in and around Old Goa.
I am not religious, but I have always liked to visit churches and temples. Many of them are beautiful; architecturally, artistically and culturally. Some are abundant, others more modest, some are serious and rich (gold, marble), others cheap and kitsch. Very interesting.
Have a look at some of the Catholic churches and monestary’s that are still to be found in Old Goa:

If I ever go back to Goa, which I hope, I would sure like to spend another day in Old Goa, because I know that there is more there to explore!
