Street art in Hong Kong: Neon Golden

Saturday, October 26, 2013

Friends and loyal readers know how much I love street art. I wrote articles about it here, here, here and here

(In fact, I have written some more articles about street art and murals. Just type these words in the searchengine in the right side bar of my blog and they will pop up for you;-).)

When I was in Hong Kong for a month I looked out for street art, but to be honest I did not run into a lot of it. Too bad!

At one point I read an article in Time Out HK about an art exhibition called 'Neon Golden' at art gallery Above Second on HK Island.

Works of renowned street artists would be on display, a mural had been made on an outside wall of the gallery and I guessed I might get more info about where to find more murals in the streets of HK.

So of I went.

It was quite a search, like usual in HK, but I found it.

The gallery turned out to be one small room with a back office.

And above the gallery renovations were going on. Poor gallery staff; the whole day in deafening drilling sounds! So I made my visit a quick one, because the noise gave me an instant headache.

Cool!

One of my favorites of this exhibit.

The works on display were nice, funny and/or cute. But they were small, unlike murals. Glad I saw it, but not very exciting.

On an outer wall, the participating artists have made a group mural. It looks nice, but there is a fence less then a meter from the piece, so you can not really step back and see it in it's totality.

That is too bad, but still a cool piece.

Now I had read about a project connected to this exhibit. Participating artists had been going to a couple of locations, where they did murals on the spot.

One location was somewhere in the New Territories, I believe, near a waterfall.

The other location was on a building from Youth Outreach. What the artists did was spectacular. Two artists went up a skyscraper, armed with climbing gear and a waist bucket with their paintstuff. They abseiled and in two days, hanging high up on a rope against the wall of that skyscraper, they made a beautiful, gigantic piece.

If you like to see pictures of it, click on the link a bit above and/or click here.

When I asked the gallery girls if I googled the correct location, they adviced me not to go there, since it had already been removed after complaints of residents that live around. I was in shock! I know that street artists themselves are cool about this. They see their work as temporary and enjoy the process of making a piece, seeing the result, taking pics of it and accepting that it may be gone tomorrow. Incredible.

I DID find some street art myself and I DID find information on where to find more. More about that in two other articles to be expected asap.

What do you think  of the big mural on the side of the skyscraper? The woman who complained apparently has said the the depicted woman looked 'scary'. I don't see it. You?

  1. That is such a shame they removed that mural. It looked beautiful.
