The Busy Mockingbird at Society6

Tuesday, March 4, 2014

A while ago I stumbled upon a blogpost by The Busy Mockingbird. It was an article that had gone viral and I understood why instantly.

The post was written by an artist and mother of a 4-year old.

The little girl insisted to draw IN her mother's sketches. At first the artist/mother, Mica Angela Hendricks, experienced this mainly as a slightly annoying interference and she did not share her daughter's enthusiasm at all. But soon the activity and results grew on her and she began to see it as a fun project and activity. With the most surprising, creative and gorgeous results.

One of the art works on a postcard.

What happened was that the mother drew 'heads', as the daughter calls them, that the daughter then would 'finish'. With bodies, whiskers, flowers, accessories and decorations.
The mother/artist would then polish up the final result.

Another work on postcards. Sorry for the vague picture.

The art works, coming out of this -initially accidental- collaboration are so cool and original!!!
That's what more people found….;-). So the artist decided to have some of the artworks printed on Society6 products and offer them for sale.

What is Society6, you may wonder….

Well, reading her article did not only bring me in contact with this artist's cool blog (The Busy Mockingbird) and her gorgeous art, but I also heard of Society6 for the first time. It is a company that lets artists get their work printed on a limited number of products. Like  phone cases, throw pillow cases, clocks and tote bags.

My two new throw pillows;-)

This is Frida Kahlo, right?
Can you see which parts the little girl drew?

Detail throw pillow.

So I ended up following a new  blog and  lusting over all what is on offer at Society6.
I ordered some products from The Busy Mockingbird: two throw pillow cases, one bag, and two series of postcards.

My purchases. Love! Happy!

It took a while before they arrived in Singapore, but I am so content with my purchases!!!

Do you recognize Katherine Hepburn ?
What do you think of this art, coming from collaborating with a 4-year old? Do you like it?

Did you already hear from Society6?
Do check out that site!

I think their products are not expensive (for being art works). Just remember that there are shipping costs involved. In my case I still found it worth it and I still found the products affordable.
If you are an artist , you might want to check out if it is worthwhile for you to try to get some of your art approved to be sold via Society6.

  1. They really become "other-wordly" when you look at the images. I've seen her work and read a story about the collaboration, and of course I got one of her cards in the mail ; ) thanks to you.

That last pillow is my favourite. Such lush colours. Do you like the quality of the bag and image? I need to check out that site. Maybe I should be putting my pugs up on there.

    1. Yes, I like the quality. The pillows are beautiful and perfect. The bag has a very basic model without any pockets. I would prefer a bit more sophisticated model, or a choice in models, but the print makes it all just fine! And it looks of good quality. Not flimsy or anything. The colors are rich and full. So no, no disappointments or complaints here.

Curious to see wether you will get something of your art up there and how that will work out!

  2. I had never heard of it which will come as no surprise to you. Congratulations with your new purchases. They look lovely. Perhaps one of your drawings will be on a pillow case or bag as well. Would be fun.

    1. Glad you like them too!

No, I don't expect mine to end up there. I looked at their extensive, fab collection and mine is too amateur, I think.

    2. "No" is something you already have got. "Yes" is what you might get. People look at your art in a complete different way than you do. We are always our own worst critics (and enemies). Try dear.
