Getting around in Taipei

Tuesday, August 27, 2013

Getting around in Taipei is pretty easy.

Not as easy as Singapore, but that's not surprising. Singapore is the easiest city to navigate through that I know of. Apart from traffic jams, transportation there works smooth, clean, transparent and easy.
One advantage of Taipei over Singapore is (for us Dutch), that in Taipei they drive on the right side of the road;-).

Back to Taipei.
First of all you can take taxi's, like the one we took from the airport to our hotel and back.

Funny; the driver entertained us with music like Beyonce on his iPad.

Disadvantages: many taxi drivers do not speak (much) english and taxis are not that widely available.

There is the MRT, which works very well and easy. Buy and Easy Card (or YoYoCard, as the locals say) which you can top up whenever you need to.
The MRT does not cover the whole of Taipei (yet) though.

We did not take any busses, so I cannot share any experiences about that.

We DID however take the train.

This is a bit more of a challenge, since only little information and signage is in english. Also the cashiers where you need to buy a ticket do not necessarily speak english.
Furthermore the frequency can be quite low, with long waits as a consequence. And we had more then our fair share of very, very crowded trains where we had to stand for hours. Not our finest hours in and around Taipei;-).

Taipei is a city that is very facilitating for people on foot, bike and motorbike. There are specific paths for them and traffic signs.

There are even paths for diagonal crossing.

They have a public bicycle rental program since 2009, named YouBike.

The number of users is still low, due to the relatively high rental price and the limited availability. To increase the use and popularity, the government has decided to lower the price and to extend the program.

Dutch friends who visited Taiwan for a month were very enthusiastic about renting a scooter in Taipei to get around.

Many locals ride (motor-)bikes, as they do in most Asian countries. It is a great way to commute, avoiding traffic jams and all.

Anyway, you will not have much problems, exploring Taipei. Their are enough ways to get around, safe, cheap and easy. Have fun!
