Mysterious art installation
A year and a half ago, while shopping at Cathy Cineleisure Orchard Mall, I stumbled upon a tiny art installation in one of the windows of PVS Store.
The small shopwindow was filled with TV’s and hand-painted bricks. The display gave the impression as if the bricks had been thrown through the television screens.
I had no idea what it was about, but I really liked the installation and the style of the paintings on the bricks. I immediately was intrigued.
As usual, I only found out more when , once back home, I googled the artist and art installation.
Power to the people by Mary Bernadette Lee
It is based on ‘Another brick in the wall’, a song from Pink Floyd, one of my favourite bands when I was a teenager. Yes, I’m THAT old, thank you very much…hahaha.
For this project May Bernadette Lee hand-painted 120 bricks and put them on display in the shop window of PVS.
Each brick was for sale for SGD50 and all proceeds went to Baptist Golden Age Centre for the Aged. She ended up selling 40 bricks, so SGD 2000 went to charity.
The remaining bricks are still up for sale, by the way. You can buy them at Left Foot at the Cathay.

If you check out Mary Bernadette’s Instagram (@mrydette) you get a good idea of what this busy lady does. Not only does she make beautiful art, she also gives workshops, has exhibitions in musea and galleries, she travels and she looks at society, people and art in a critical way. She gives her audience food for thought.
I’m definitely a fan!
