Western antiques in Itaewon, Seoul
It was strange to find a whole street (actually a few streets) with western antiques in Seoul. To be precise in Itaewon Antique Furniture Street.
This specialized street was formed in the 1960’s when North American soldiers, stationed in Yangson, sold their furniture before returning to the States.
Nowadays the around 100 shops in a couple of streets sell antiques and vintage from all around the world.
It’s quite unexpected to see all these american and european vintage items for sale in Seoul, South Korea, don’t you think?
For me, the clash between the merchandise and it’s environment heightened the appeal. I found Antique Furniture Street photogenic, entertaining and good for a small exploration of around an hour or so.
I did not make an effort to find out how the prices are in this area. I would try if I would live in Seoul and would have a home to decorate. But with almost nobody speaking english finding out things like this is not an easy task. I guess I would need someone to translate for me. Seoul is not a cheap city though, so my hopes for reasonable prices are not that high up.
