In two other articles I wrote about the retro Ocean Park in Hong Kong. You went along in the cute cable cars with the gorgeous views and we looked at the attractions and acts in the park.
Today I would like to show you the animals in the park.
As you may well know by now, I am in fact not a fan of animals in parks, caged animals, circus animals, etc. On the contrary, I am against it.
However, from time to time I come in a situation where there are in fact animals in captivity and sometimes I decide to go along, because I’m already there anyway.
We went to Ocean Park for the cable car ride and the views. All the rest was added value.
The animals were the last thing I wanted to see, but we were there and it was a hot day. Steaming hot. Exhausting heat. Did I mention it was hot?;-)
And imagine then coming across this:
We did not bring an umbrella to shade ourselves and there was not a lot of shadow around.
Quite weird, this arctic theme on a hot day like that;-).
So in we went. And it was quite polar indeed…brrrr….but we needed a break from the heat. So it was ok.
Polar, ocean, sea…but no, there were no ice bears or anything like that. Fortunately for them;-).
There were sea elephants. Or are that sea cows? Sea lions? Seals? Anyways, that sort of creatures.
The sea elephants are gigantic and some of them could use dental retainers!
How strange to see him put his flipper over his eyes! Or is it a she?
Yeah, yeah, you get some too.
Oh, and back in you go…. splash!
In principal the basin is nicely done with glass walls all the way down and passages under water level, so that you can observe the animals while they are under water.
At least, in theory you can.
It was quite hard though, since there were SO many visitors. We suspect many of them to be mainland Chinese. They come in groups and have absolutely no manners. They talk loud, bang on the aquarium glass, startle the animals, scream, are in your face…a real nuisance. Sorry, folks, I’m generalizing here, but the complaints about mainland chinese tourists are mondial. Even the HongKong Chinese complain a lot about them!
Being squeezed everywhere:-(
Then there are the penguins. With (at that time) Halloween pumpkins made out of colored, icey snow, and staff with mouth pieces.
What Ocean Park is really known for though, is for it’s panda’s.
They have the black and white’s that we all know. And they do what we all know they do: they eat bamboo;-)
And then they have some red panda’s, who actually look nothing like the other panda’s. Maybe in laziness, since they were sleeping.
Well, that’s all, folks. I would not recommend to go to Ocean Park just to see these animals, but if you like the total package of the gorgeous environment, the cable car ride, the attractions and the zoo-part, then you should definitely visit.
I have one final post about this park lined up for you. It will appear somewhere within the coming weeks.
Thanks for stopping by and be kind to animals, will you?
