Especially if they are contemporary, good-looking, edgy, quirky and unusual. And if they are all about travel, art, design and culture.
Friends in different cities and countries sometimes call me an insider because I tend to know about the latest hotspots and events. This is not because I am so connected, because I usually am not, being in fact an outsider;-).
But I tend to be hungry for information. So I read mags and newspapers and I google. That’s how I can be quite insider-ish for an outsider, LOL.
Staying at the W Hong Kong gives me access to a range of magazines and newspapers, which makes me very happy.
The two main magazines to stay updated about what’s on when and where in Hong Kong are Time Out HK and HK Magazine.
Time Out is provided by W to my room and appears two weekly. HK Magazine I have to get myself, but it is free and appears weekly.
Together they give lots of information.
HK Magazine has cool covers, with a good sense of humor. Take e.g. this cover. It is about new versus old, so they photoshopped contemporary elements into a vintage picture. Fun!
Or this one, about standup comedy;-).
In W’s restaurant Kitchen there are magazines and newspapers lying around for grabs.
The last month I spelled The South China Morning Post daily, and the International Herald Tribune as well. It’s always nice to get a feeling for what’s happening locally, while staying updated about the world news too.
One of the magazines you can find in Kitchen is Carve, about food and restaurants in Hong Kong. An interesting read, specifically when you are a foodie. Be sure to check it out when in Hong Kong.
Another mag is PPaper, in various editions, like Fashion. And Art.
The Magazines from PPaper are beautifully designed with interesting content. Unfortunately they are in Chinese. Still, the layout and images can be enjoyed despite the language barrier.
The most beautiful magazine is one that I found in my room. I think it is published by fashion store chain I.T. They have a store here in the Elements Mall.
The store is beautiful, with artistic clothes and displays. They carry brands like Viktor and Rolf, Acne and various Japanese names. Their collection is eccentric and really expensive. I do not like all the clothes they sell, but they are special to say the least. When you are around, be sure to pop in their store, just to have a look and be amazed.
As can be expected, their magazine is as eccentric as their fashion collection and the graphic design is very artistical. I am normally not really into fashion magazines. All those glossy pictures of expensive models in unaffordable clothes I find quite boring, to be honest.
Whenever a fashion magazine has an editorial that is more then just that and the pictures become art, then I become interested. Moved, even.
Like e.g. this editorial from some time back:
I know, these are iphone pictures, from pictures, so a lot of the quality and impact is lost, I guess. But on me, it had a jawdropping effect at the time. The colors and the atmosphere were mesmerizing.
Well, I.T.’s magazine has the same effect on me. I will show you what I mean in tomorrow’s post.
Which are your favorite magazines and why?
